To open or not to open the windows

🪟 When is the best time to open your windows?

We know bringing outdoor air inside is often the best way to improve our indoor climate. But a good habit to get into is checking AQI before opening windows. Any good weather app or AQI trackers update hourly, so it’s worth a quick look before you reach for that handle. AccuWeather or Apple Weather offer live AQI data for many locations. Here’s a checklist for when to freshen your indoor climate with outdoor air based on the AQI. We’ve used the European AQI scale as a reference.

Feel free to keep windows open when the AQI is below 25
Open windows in short bursts when AQI is between 26-50
Keep windows closed when the AQI is above 50 or if you see haze or smell smoke.

💡Tip from Birdie: Even 15 minutes of open windows can exchange the air effectively and improve your indoor climate without letting too much pollution in if the AQI is around 50. If the AQI is higher, but your CO2 levels are above 1000ppm, try to ventilate during nighttime when air pollution is typically lower.
